Ben mentioned in Hedda Hopper's October 15, 1949 column. She gets the facts wrong. John Ford first noticed him on the set of Fort Apache, when Ben, who was doubling the film's stars, saved the lives of several stuntmen trapped in a wagon drawn by a team of runaway horses heading straight towards an outcropping of rocks. As a reward for his bravery, Ford signed Ben to a personal acting contract of $7,000 a week.

The “Ben Johnson Monument Project,” an exhibit to honor the Osage County native, will be open through the last weekend in September at the Old No. 1 Firehouse Art Center in Pawhuska.
The art center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays.
The exhibit focuses on creation of the monument by sculptor John D. Free, a Pawhuska native. The sculpture will depict Johnson roping a steer and will be about 14 foot tall and 32 feet long. The exhibit will include educational elements for children to learn about sculpting.
Johnson was an Academy Award-winning actor and world champion steer roper who was inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. He died April 8, 1996.
The monument will be placed outside the Pawhuska Community Center.
Museum officials expect the sculpture to be finished by December.
